In this map you will find an overview of the projects that are included in the Long Term Strategic Housing plan 2023 - 2032.
The campus, with all its facilities, is of distinctive importance for us as UT and of great added value for the future within our Shaping2030 strategy: "Our campus is a dynamic hotspot, where we meet, brainstorm and try to solve current issues." We want to preserve it and maintain it well. In order to keep the campus future-proof and to be able to determine in a well-considered manner which real estate initiatives on the campus are necessary, we have a Long Term Strategic Housing Plan (LTSH). Each project will still be decided separately whether or not to proceed, with the exception of a number of projects that have already been decided in 2021 or earlier, such as renovation Langezijds and Kop Langezijds.

The ITC faculty will move to the campus of the University of Twente in 2023. The transformation of Langezijds, an existing building dating from 1970, is in full effect right now. The ambition: a healthy, green, and sustainable faculty building. In 2023, the ITC faculty will move from its current home on Hengelosestraat in Enschede to this unique Langezijds building on the University of Twente campus.
It is currently being explored what interpretation Kop Langezijds will be given. The direction that is being considered is a general space that can be used by multiple faculties, creating a lot of exposure for users. Kop Langezijds will be completed in the same style as the ITC and will supply approximately 1,500 m² of multifunctional space.
In addition to the educational and research facilities, we have various sports and culture facilities that also make our campus so special. This requires a permanent investment in current and new facilities to stay up to date and safe. When it comes to housing various sports and culture facilities, an enhancement in both capacity and quality is desirable and necessary. Therefore, a master plan has been set up with various sub-projects such as an upgrade of Vrijhof.
This mainly concerns quick-wins with regard to theatre technology and improving the visibility of Culture in the foyer and outside with lighting. The design and preparation phase will start in November 2022 and realisation is scheduled for 2023.
The plans for renovating Paviljoen are almost completed. Implementation is expected to start at the end of 2022/beginning of 2023. Service department Campus and Facility Management who was located at Paviljoen, is temporarily housed in (the previously rented building) De Linde.
The renovation of De Boerderij (the former location of the Faculty Club) for location the Contact Centre is almost completed and the users will move in 2023. The Contact Centre will be a meeting place for (international) students, and in the future also PhD candidates, where they can turn to with all kind of (practical) questions. It will be a place with room for personal attention. The service departments CES (SAS, Student Services) and MC (SI, Study Information Centre) will work together in answering student-related questions, in a personal way, but also via digital channels or telephone.
In the coming years, there will be three major renovation projects: Cubicus, Zilverling and Horsttoren ring. In 2023, Cubicus will be renovated until 2025 preferable in one, maybe in two phases. During the renovation, installation adjustments will be made in order to improve climate and ventilation and functional adjustments will take place to better respond to the new way of working (as a combination of working from home or on campus).
End 2023, the first part of BMS staff will move from Cubicus towards Capitool 15. Employees will stay here until at least 2024 and they can return to Campus when the renovation is completed in 2025. As soon as the renovation is completed, the users will return to campus. Pending the renovation of Zilverling, some departments of EEMCS will be housed at Capitol 15 as well as in temporarily housing on campus on de Es.
Education activities remain on Campus.
Robotics Centre will be located in the existing Westhorst and Carré buildings. For this purpose, the Westhorst will be emptied and rebuilt. The part in Carré will not change a lot. This renovation is expected to be completed in 2028/2029.
In order to meet the desired capacity in the short term for sports activities in the winter, an air dome will be temporarily be placed on the current beach field or on the camping site. The decision on the exact location has yet to take place, with the aim of minimizing the inconvenience to other users.
An extra temporary dance hall will be provided at the parking lot directly behind the Vrijhof to meet growing demand for dance activities.
There will be an extra area for power sports on the UTrack zone to absorb the extra demand on the current gym.
Around 2023, the padel courts will also be expanded. The outdoor swimming pool including the pumping station will be renovated and the Water Sports Complex will follow to be renovated around 2024.
In consultation with the other users, Stall and Blokhutten will be deployed for the collaboration VU Amsterdam and UT. To this end, the Stall will be renovated into a multi-purpose meeting space and an extension of the Blokhutten will take place.
The multifunctional workshop Cube for Engineering Technology faculty will be completed in 2024. The Cube is an extension of the existing Horst complex and comprises approximately 3,000m2 research space. This new multifunctional workshop of the Faculty of Engineering Technology is an extension of the existing Horst complex. The design of the CUBE is sustainable and transparent. Upon entering you look out over the 6 meter high metal and welding workshop. The floor is recessed so that you have a view over the entire space. Downstairs, students and researchers test innovations, you can see the landscape outside, and the crane is above you. The building breathes Engineering Technology.
Housing corporation De Veste has an official permit to build more housing on the UT campus. The Boulevard is the first location where De Veste will make a start on the construction of around 90 student residences.
End 2023, the first part of BMS staff will move from Cubicus towards Capitool 15. Employees will stay here until at least 2024 and they can return to Campus when the renovation is completed in 2025. As soon as the renovation is completed, the users will return to campus.
The main building will be extended on the ground floor with two changing rooms. The showers and toilets on the first floor will be moved to the ground floor. This creates space on the first floor to realize two consultation rooms and the current pub can be expanded. Other rooms such as toilets and storage will be equipped with a new wall, floor and ceiling finish.The blue shed next to the main building will be expanded with frost-free storage for four four-man boats.
The next expansion as a result of the sector plans of faculty of Engineering Technology will take place at the current location of Kleinhorst, next to the Cube. This concerns an addition of approximately 2,500m2 to research space. Completion is planned for 2025 or 2026. The intention is that the groups Thermal and Fluid Engineering (TFE) and Mechanics of Solids, Surfaces and Systems (MS3) will (partly) move here.
In the Pavilion Zone there is room for smaller-scale developments. It is conceivable that part of Sport & Culture can be realized here in the future. The idea is to build a new Body & Mind center here in the period 2025-2027. For this reason, two temporary accomodations will be realized on campus in 2023: the dance hall and a space for strength sports.

Together with departments of TNW faculty, the departments Biomedical Signals and Systems (BSS), Electrical Engineering’s practical room Welpzaal and collective educational facilities will be located in De Es.
Meanwhile, temporary accommodation for EEMCS is also needed during the Zilverling renovation. Between 2026 and 2028, staff of EEMCS will be housed at Capitool 15 and at portocabins on campus, on the spot where De Es will be built

As a result of sector plans and growth in education, De Es will be expanded with new construction. It is expected that this new building will be completed in 2027 or 2028. The users of the research facilities are expected to be at least the faculties of Science and Technology (S&T) and Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS). It specifically concerns S&T departments Nano-Photonics and Tranlational Physiology departments and EEMC departments Biomedical Signals and Systems (BSS), Electrical Engineering's practical room Welpzaal).
The intention is that De Es will become a general UT building, where facilities can be used as flexibly as possible and it is not difficult to change tenants and functions. It is also conceivable that one or more do-it-yourself studios will be created here from LISA service department, in the context of digitization.

The expansion and renovation of the Sports Centre is expected to be completed in 2031. This adds approximately 2,400 m² to the real estate portfolio. As a temporary facility, an air dome will be purchased in 2023 for the indoor season. The further upgrade/renovation of the Sports Centre will be fully weighed against the renovation needs of Vrijhof.
In the coming years, there will be three major renovation projects. From 2023/2024, the Cubicus will be renovated. As soon as this is completed, the Zilverling will be renovated from around 2025. Then, it is expected from 2028, the Horsttoren/ring will be renovated from mid-2026.
